Academic Policies

ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITY:

Study abroad participants are responsible for reviewing and understanding the following academic policies.

The Office of International Programs and Services can only provide academic information and general guidance and cannot provide official academic advising. Academic Advisors and/or Department Chairs should be consulted regarding participants’ official academic advising.
Enrollment Status: During a fall or spring term, study abroad participants are required to be in full time enrollment status while abroad, unless special permission is granted. Failure to maintain full time status can affect financial aid, scholarships, immigration requirements in the host country, and international insurance eligibility. During the first two weeks of your program you must confirm your credit hours with your Peer Mentor. Additionally, if at any point during your program your credit hours change, you must inform your Peer Mentor as a reduced status may affect both your enrollment status and eligibility for Financial Aid.
- Undergraduate students must be registered for the equivalent to at least 12 credits to be considered full time.
- Graduate students must be registered for the equivalent to at least 9 credits to be considered full time.

Residency Requirements:
- 30 of the last 60 credits earned must be taken at Millersville University.
- There is no limit to the number of overall transfer credits accepted as long as a minimum of 30 credits and 50% of the major and minor are earned in residence at Millersville University.

Repeating Classes Abroad: Millersville courses for which you earned a grade (except W-withdraw) may not be repeated abroad.

Dropping Courses: Participants are bound by the host institution’s and/or Affiliated organization’s rules for dropping courses.

Attendance: Participants are expected to attend and participate in all classes, assignments, labs, recitations, or shifts as scheduled by your Program Leader, supervisor, and/or host institution. In some academic systems, both grades and/or credit earned can be directly tied to your class attendance.

International Placements: Study abroad participants completing internships, student teaching experiences, and social work field placements, must receive departmental approval for their placement.
- Participants must complete the minimum number of hours required for academic credit and/or certification.
- Participants completing an international field placement for certification in their academic program must follow all departmental and university policies regarding certification requirements and reg.

Graduation: Students may officially apply for graduation with an incomplete Degree Audit Report, while waiting for their study abroad transfer credit to be processed.

Academic Calendar: Due to the different academic calendars around the world, the start or end dates of a study abroad program may fall outside of the normal Millersville academic calendar. MU students are not permitted to miss the start of an MU term due to a study abroad program, without prior discussion and approval by their MU professors.
Transfer Credit: Study abroad courses and credits are treated by MU as transfer courses and credits, regardless if the transcript is earned from an international university or U.S. university.
- This policy does not apply to study abroad courses and credits earned through another Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) university as students will apply for Visiting Student Status. With Visiting Student Status, all credits and grades transferred from PASSHE universities are treated as home university credits and grades.

Equivalencies: Grades and credits vary among the different academic systems around the world. The Office of International Programs and Services will review and approve grade and credit equivalencies prior to approving a study abroad program. Academic Advisor(s) and Department Chairs will determine the equivalency of the course.

Transfer Credit Approval: Participants are required to gain approval for their study abroad courses prior to departure and submit a signed form to the Office of International Programs and Services (IPS). Any changes must be communicated to IPS and an additional form must be completed.
- Undergraduate students must complete the Study Abroad Transfer Credit Form.
- Graduate students must complete the College of Graduate Studies and Adult Learning’s Transfer Credit Form.

Transfer Credit and GPA: Transfer credits are not used in computing Millersville GPAs.

Pass/Fail Grades: Millersville University does not accept transfer credit from classes that are evaluated on a Pass/Fail grading basis.

Grades For undergraduate students: A grade equivalent to a C- or higher is required in order for your credits to transfer to Millersville University. If a student obtains a grade lower than a C-, no credit will be awarded.

Grades For graduate students: A grade equivalent to a B or higher is required in order for your credits to transfer into your graduate degree program.

Transcript Processing: Make sure to request a transcript and have it sent to the Office of International Programs and Services (IPS) at the address below. If the transcript is sent to another office on campus, there will be a lengthy delay in the processing of your grades. Your study abroad transcript will be initially processed by IPS. Your international transcripts cannot be processed without a completed Transfer Credit Form.
